CONTRA, Sara Vertongen, Het Nieuwstedelijk
I was invited by Sara Vertongen and Het Nieuwstedelijk to design two structures for the European research project CONTRA which explores the positive potential of social conflict in urban transitions: CONflict in TRAnsformations.
I build a small house on wheels for Sara that she took with her throughout the busy Stalenstraat. From there, she engaged with residents in conversations about living, having a place of one's own, fears for the future, and environmental changes.
I also designed a portable shrine for the closing ritual of this project. Together with residents we lifted one of the parking blocks from the ground. Together we carried this heavy piece on the shrine towards the Stiemerbeek, a river inside the green zone of the Stiemervallei in Genk. Here we sacrificed the parking block and it’s connotations to the river and the surrounding nature.
